Experience Drives Perspective
Joseph E. Riley is an arbitrator of domestic and international disputes. He also offers service as a mediator and a consultant in connection with such disputes. His perspective and capacity in these roles are informed by his extensive and uniquely well-rounded experience as a long-serving Vice President and General Counsel of a major global manufacturer and supplier, as a successful "first chair" trial attorney, and as an accomplished and innovative telecommunications regulatory attorney.

As a Vice President and General Counsel, he was involved in, among other things, negotiating, managing and documenting dozens of corporate asset transactions around the globe; negotiating, forming and overseeing the formation of more than a thousand domestic and international contracts; and managing and resolving countless distributor, intellectual property, employment, toxic tort and other commercial disputes in more than forty countries.

As a trial attorney, he is recognized for both the broad array and complexity of the litigation matters he has handled, his facility for both written and oral advocacy, and his outstanding trial record.

As a regulatory attorney, he successfully led a multi-year effort to forge a new and progressive form of telecommunications regulation, an effort that involved legislative lobbying, legislative drafting, negotiations with public service regulatory agencies and, as well, a year-long administrative litigation process complicated by substantial competitive intervention and opposition.
Mr. Riley is recognized by both his peers and the judiciary for his legal acumen and his integrity with an "AV Pre-Eminent" Martindale-Hubbell rating and recognized as an in-house Leader In The Law by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
International In Scope
In addition to his professional work throughout the United States, Mr. Riley has travelled extensively in the discharge of his global business, executive and legal responsibilities. In the process, he has become familiar with, and in many cases, steeped in the business and legal regimes in many countries, even appearing before foreign courts and tribunals when appropriate and necessary. He has traveled to, and conducted or directed business and legal matters in Ireland, England, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands, Greece, Hungary, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Canada, China and Australia. In addition, and without travelling, he has also conducted directly or orchestrated legal and business matters in Chile, Argentina, Singapore, Japan, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the Philippines, Russia, India, South Africa and Belgium. It is fair to say that Mr. Riley has legal and business experience that is genuinely and richly international in scope.
